Glimpses from our 2010 Project Voyage to Kenya — Views from the Country and the Coastal Region

Office of Foerderkreis Kenia Freudenstadt e.V., Germany. Updated version. Original English version first published September 05, 2010. Page 4/6.

The images on this page exemplify some of the regional diversity present in the area covered by our work:

Starting Thursday, 02/11/2010: Holidays in Kenya

Having visited the projects, some of us continued their stay in Kenya pursuing private activities.

We spent two days on Lamu, a predominantly Muslim island whose Arab culture contrasts completely with the Kenyan mainland.

Part of us participated in safaris to Tsavo East, and West, and Amboseli national parks. After this safari interlude, business and professional reasons prompted our society's board member and the author of this report's original version to go to Nairobi in order to return to Germany. The society's project coordinator and the retired society member remained in Kenya for another few weeks.

They visited Mombasa, the Indian Ocean metropolis; then the former missionary station of Swabian pastor Dr. Ludwig Krapf in Rabai; and finally again the Kenyan highlands including parts of the East African Rift Valley.

We continue this page by presenting some images from the coastal region and the south of Kenya in order to further exemplify the environment where the individuals we sponsor are living in:

The following shots of the Marafa Depression exemplify one of the amazing landscapes that can be found in the coastal region — in geographical and geological terms alike, Kenya is a very rich country indeed.
The Marafa Depression, also known as Hell's Kitchen and located north-west of Malindi, is a geological area characterized by interesting formations that have been brought about by wind and sand erosion.

We are always surprised by the amazing ingenuity and engineering skills displayed by local craftsmen who are making useful implements out of materials which, in Western countries, would usually end up in a junk yard.
